Daughter has a new pitching coach that is asking she throw a weighted ball and hit her spots with it from the distance she would throw a game at. Question, should a pitcher be throwing a weighted ball full speed. She is complaining her shoulder is sore and forearm feels like she is getting tendonitis.

   Susan,

Stop this immediately. This can cause serious injury to your daughters arm and shoulder. They are dangerous to a pitcher. It is the one thing I have a absolute passion about not using with a pitcher. I have seen way too many pitchers get hurt by weighted balls.

I personally know of several young ladies who have had problems (Shoulder and wrist) because of using these balls. If a pitching coach told me he was using them with my daughter I would end the lessons right then and there and walk out. Never to return.

As a coach I dont want anything to do with a product that has any kind of potential in injuring a pitcher as part of a method of teaching. It is more important to me to protect my player than risk the chance of possible damage to them. I do not care how much knowledge the instructor has about using them. They should never be used period and if your daughter is doing a full windmill with them then its no wonder she is sore.

There are a number of ways to increase a pitchers speed. Long toss drill being one of them.

Elliott.

Sorry but im not agree with you. It's all about good sense.Weighted ball are a great tool as well like 14" or 16" balls. But never and never do complete and fast motion using WB,sure they can cause injury if not used with a great good sense. They are good for enforce forearm and wrist and finger even.Im not a picthing coach excepting for myself but im sure that use of WB increase my speed and confidence of 30% at least. When i was child and baseball pitching coach taught us fundamental he used to do warm up with larger and 30% weighted ball.Always screamin':slow slow and careful, think about motion not throwing. So i recommend WB but be sure to use with coach present and in large slow motion(just like Ernie teaches, you could build WB by yourself putting into the seams finished nails a range of +15% or +25%
of regular softball weight).Every tool could be dangerous if used in wrong way.If pitchers are over 18 i recommend Cannon Ball too. It's a great bouncing magic ball to work by yourself over a concrete wall and works great for increase speed, spin and shoulder strenght.

   Hi Ernie,

In your videos, you use some tools made from surgical tubing. Can you recommend size(s) to use?

Thanx for your continued interest in coaching,

   Ernie,
My dd is a 9thgrader just starting her hs career. I had a question about some of your videos. Do the troubleshooting and increase speed
use any step style pitchers. My DD is a step style and still manages to throw pretty hard. She averages 54-56mph. This week the 2 highest speeds were 58mph. Her coach teaches a basic step style that works well so far. Will the videos help pitchers using step style.

Hi, my videos aren't really for any specific style. I just tell my students to drive as hard off the pitching rubber as hard as they can. I don't tell them how far out I want them to go. Some throw a little more like steppers, and some drive a long way off the pitching rubber. It shouldn't make any difference as to which style they use.
Good luck,
Ernie

   Hi Ernie,

Hope all is well. I recently saw Michelle Smith at a clinic in Chicago. Her mechanics and release seem very different from what you teach as well as what I have seen from Finch and others. Are there so many correct ways or are certain people successful despite themselves? Please advise.

   Dear Ernie,

I am running a pitching clinic for beginning pitchers (ages 8-11). Do you have any games or fun drills to make it a little more interesting? Their attention spans are not very long! I use the basic drills, but I thought if I spiced it up a little, they would enjoy it more.

Thanks.

Mike B-Chicago, yes there are many styles out there. The thing to remember is: There are three things that all the top pitchers have in common. Resistance, Rotation and Timing. You will find most of them
will have different Pre Motions and other things, but they will all have those three things in common.
Good luck,
Ernie

Can you be more specific on what you mean by Resistance, Rotation and Timing?

When my grand-daughter is off, her picthes are up(way up) and outside. Any thoughts why?

Thanks,

Steve

13. "Playing Up"
In response to message #0

Coach, what is your opinion of letting your daughter play up in the next age brackets? My daughter is 10 and a pretty decent pitcher in 10U, but we are contemplating playing in a 5 team 14u tournament this weekend. For batting practice, I am ok with this, one team (a 12U team) has two of the fastest pitchers in the nation and we will face them next year(2005) anyway, our kids need to bat against better pitchers so the offense part, I am ok with. The defense part I am a little worried about, for one thing my pitchers will have to use a 12 inch ball instead of 11, maybe not a big deal, and the other is that we are pitching from 40 feet. Two of the teams are 14U teams, one is a 12u, and the other is our 10u team. What do you think of this ?
Thanks for your opinion or anyone one else who has experience with playing up.

Coach Donnie

   Hi Ernie,

I have a couple of things for you to get back into the groove with.

What are your feelings about pitchers that slap their leg with their glove? Does it hurt or help? I've tried to break my daughter (18U) of this without too much success. I've tired to make her pitch without her glove on and she'll be better for a while and then goes back to it. Another by-product of the slap is her left arm flys out in almost a swimming type motion as she comes down to slap her leg. I've tried making her pitch next to a tarp or a wall in an effort to try and break the habit. She'll be good for a short while and then returns to the arm swinging out again. The other thing that I also see is she'll also be late getting her landing foot out to the power line at times and not be fully open when she delivers the ball.

Any suggestions?

Hi, Yes, I have some slappers myself, one on the Olympic Team. I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless it's affecting her pitching, or causing injury.
I would work on the opening up though. You must have good timing to maintain speed and have good breaking pitches. Her right arm should be at approximately 1:00 or 2:00 in her circle when her stride foot lands. She should be open enough to have her wrist snap just in front of her hip closing. It would depend on the pitch as to whether the hip would close to almost closed to about a 45 degree angle.
Good luck,
Ernie

   Ernie,

Thanks for your thoughts. I've been working on getting her to finish opening better. What I've been doing is having her start on the mound like normal, but I'll setup on the outside of the batters box. It makes her exaggerate opening up her hips. It seems to help quite a bit.

Hi John, I hope everything is going well with you. I enjoyed our time together at Nationals. Do you know yet which National you will go to this year? I haven't dedecided yet. I was proud of my 16 year old this National. She pitched 37 innings and the last 2 games in the 16 & Under Nationals. Mainly the reason I was so proud is that she was up and down during the season, but went to work and did a great job at Nationals. She was on The Batbusters.
I look forward to seeing you again, be sure and have another good drill I can " borrow " from you.
Take care,
Ernie
